Congresswoman Katherine Clark is leading an effort in the U.S. House to protect and strengthen the Child Care Development Block Grant (CCDBG) aimed at ensuring low income families have access to quality child care. 146 Members of Congress joined Clark's push to protect and strengthen CCDBG, focusing on more access for low income families, high impact early intervention programs, and investments in programs serving children with disabilities.

U.S. Representatives Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) and Richard Hanna (R-New York) today sent a letter signed by 61 of their Republican and Democratic colleagues urging the leadership of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education to restore funding for the federal Preschool Development Grant program. Funding has been eliminated in recent drafts of the House and Senate appropriations bills.

Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20) introduced legislation that will help eligible education and government entities across the country access federal prekindergarten (pre-k) funding. The Pre-K for USA Act creates new prekindergarten development grants and provides school districts and local entities with a direct line to federal funding, eliminating their reliance on states to access federal pre-k dollars.

Congresswoman Katherine Clark led a group of 122 Members of Congress advocating for strong investments in early education, early intervention, and high quality child care. In a letter to the House Appropriations Committee, Clark and her colleagues urged the Committee to include updated and appropriate funding for the Child Care Development Block Grant (CCDBG), Grants for Infants and Families, and Preschool Grants for the 2016 fiscal year. Clark emphasized that funding cuts over the last decade have led to hundreds of thousands of low income children losing access to quality child care.
